Every Chapter meeting SWPA holds we get to hear a short presentation from one of our members about a part of their unique culture. Our members discuss popular traditions, unique foods they enjoy, holiday traditions, and share things specific to their own family.
Throughout the semester SWPA has anywhere from 4-5 DEI focused events. They change each semester to ensure each semester our members hear about different important topics! It is incredibly important we educate our members about everything that falls under the umbrella of diversity to ensure SWPA is a safe space, and to ensure our members can take what they learn with them throughout any endeavor. Some of our spring events include discussions over issues unhoused women face, talks on intersectionality, presentations on different gender identities and sexual orientations, ASL workshops, disability workshops, and a cultural potluck picnic.
During Chapter meetings, and other in-person meetings that involve presentations, SWPA utilizes the Closed Captioning feature to ensure anyone hard of hearing is able to understand speakers, and to allow people to potentially catch something that was said. Further, after Chapter meetings all slideshows are sent out for members to review at their own pace. SWPA also sends out weekly emails with all important information concerning events, and any announcements, ensuring members are kept in the loop and reminded of upcoming things. GroupMe messages are also sent out daily when there are events or other important things happening!
Our Vice President of DEI and Operations, alongside our DEI Committee Heads work hard to showcase the diverse events, members, and cultures we represent at SWPA! We value what each of our members bring to the table, and strive to ensure DEI is intertwined into everything SWPA does and represents.
